Tactiles (Tactile Ground Surface Indicators - TGSI)

When you choose Total Tactiles, you're not just getting a product - you're getting a fully certifiable install that clears inspection without delay. Everything we supply and fit meets AS 1428.4.1:2009, and is tailored to pass certifier checks the first time.

Material:
Our Tactiles are made of a durable material suitable for outdoor use, and slip-resistant in both dry and wet conditions. They're selected to suit the traffic, exposure, and substrate of your project.

Dimensions: The size and spacing of tactiles are specified to ensure they are detectable by foot and cane. No risks, no certifier flags.

Contrast:
There should be a sufficient contrast between the color of the tactiles and the surrounding surface to aid visually impaired individuals in detecting them. The level of contrast varies across products - (a)Integrated 30%, (b)Discrete 45%, (c)Composite Discrete 60% (refer to the image on the left for reference).

Installation:
We dont leave anything to chance. Every tactile is installed with precise alignment, correct orientation, and substrate-appropiate fixings in accordance with Australian Standard guidelines.

Can You help choose the right tactile setup for our project?

1000%. Whether it’s a school, apartment complex or retail entry, we’ll guide you on what’s needed - no guesswork. We’ll help you choose the right certified product, layout and finish for your site’s needs, getting you to handover stress-free. Just send us the plans, we'll handle the rest.

What does your quote include for tactile supply and install?

Our entire process is built around being the final trade that doesn’t slow you down. We know the certifier requirements, the council traps, and the install risks. In our quote-to-install service we don’t make mistakes, ask the wrong questions, or waste time chasing clarifications. We get the job done, and done right. The first time.

Included in Every Quote:
✔️ Full site-specific supply & install cost
✔️ Australian Standards–compliant materials (AS 1428.4.1)
✔️ Review of plans for compliance issues (if provided)
✔️ Luminance contrast & slip resistance guidance
✔️ Estimated install window (so you can lock it in early)
✔️ Certified supply & installation advisory

We’re not sure if our architect’s plans are compliant... can you help?

Yes, and it’s more common than you think! We often catch issues early and help clients fix plan gaps before the certifier finds them. Architects often miss key compliance details when it comes to tactiles. We regularly see plans that don’t meet AS 1428.4.1 requirements for placement, spacing, or luminance contrast.

That’s why sending us your plans enables us to catch these issues upfront saving you thousands in delays, rework, or failed handovers. We ensure your certifier signs off the first time.

Can you explain what LRV is and why it matters?

LRV stands for Luminance Reflectance Value. It measures the contrast between your tactiles and surrounding floor - which is legally required to help the visually impaired identify hazards. We handle testing and selection so you’re fully compliant per Australian standards.

What surfaces can you install tactiles onto?

We install tactiles onto most surfaces as long as they meet Australian Standard AS 1428.4.1 requirements for substrate integrity and adhesion. Before install, we’ll always assess your site to confirm it's compliant and suitable.

Below's a breakdown to help.

Compliant Substrate Types Include:
✔️ Concrete (cured & sealed)
– most common and reliable surface
✔️ Pavers (fixed, non-flexing)
– must be tightly laid with no movement
✔️ Tiled flooring – provided it's level and stable
✔️ Timber (internal only) – must be sealed and fixed over solid subfloor
✔️ Bitumen/asphalt – typically used with mechanical fixings or adhesives rated for bitumen
✔️ Vinyl/sheet flooring – must be well-bonded, indoor use only
✔️ Natural stone – including granite and marble; needs surface prep

What are Non-Compliant or Risk-Prone Surfaces?

Basically any type of surfaces which may require treatment or rework.

Some common examples:

⚠️ Loose pavers or floating floorboards
⚠️ Dusty, cracked, or flaking concrete
⚠️ Wet substrates or surfaces with hydrostatic pressure
⚠️ Unsealed tiles or stone with high porosity

But don't stress. We'll let you know BEFOREHAND of potential compliance/risk prone issues, and the most effecient wasy to solve them.
